    What is the Flu

The flu is caused by the highly contagious influenza virus.  It is a respiratory illness that has similar symptoms to a cold, but more severe. There are two types of influenza virus, type A and type B.  Both cause acute infection of the upper respiratory system including the nose, throat, bronchial tubes, and lungs. The virus enters the body through the mucous membranes and is easily spread through coughs and sneezing.  Epidemics are very common.

Influenza is rarely dangerous in healthy adults, but does pose risks of potential complications for the elderly and those who have chronic conditions like asthma or heart disease. The flu taxes the immune system, making people with it more vulnerable to pneumonia and ear and sinus infections.

Although many people with stomach illnesses say they have “the flu” this is an incorrect statement. Influenza does not cause gastrointestinal illness.

    Preventing the Flu

There are precautions you can take to prevent contracting and spreading the flu virus. If you are at high risk of complications, you may want to consider a flu shot, although they are not guaranteed to prevent the flu. Flu shots also have the risk of unpleasant side effects that mimic flu symptoms. Natural alternatives are available to boost immunity and help prevent infection without side effects.

It is extremely important to practice good hygiene. Frequent hand washing is the best way to prevent infection with the flu.  Do not touch your face or put your hands in your mouth. Cover sneezes and coughs with your sleeve and not your hands; this prevents the spread of germs from the hands to items that other people then touch.  Don't share pens, cell phones or other items that are likely to be contaminated. When using public restrooms, use towels as a barrier when flushing the toilet and turning sink handles or doorknobs.

Keep your immune system healthy by staying properly hydrated and eating plenty of healthy, nutrient dense foods, particularly fresh, raw fruits and vegetables.  A proper diet provides much needed vitamins and phytonutrients that build stronger defenses.

    Flu Symptoms

Flu symptoms include fever, chills, sneezing, coughing, body aches, extreme fatigue, runny nose or congestion. Flu symptoms are very similar to those of the common cold, but are usually more severe and come on suddenly.

    Help for Flu

Antiviral medications like Tamiflu can be prescribed by your doctor within the first 24-48 hours of the onset of symptoms. These medications can shorten the duration of the flu if taken fast enough, but tend to have unpleasant side effects like nausea and vomiting.
