    What is Tendonitis?

Tendons are thick, fibrous and flexible cords that attach muscle to the bones in the body. When one of these tendons becomes irritated or inflamed, (usually as a result of daily wear and tear or physical injury), it is known as tendonitis.

    What Causes Tendonitis?

Tendonitis can develop due to normal everyday activities where strain is placed on tendons. It can also be caused by inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and the condition commonly affects areas such as the heels, shoulders, elbows, wrists, fingers, the foot, hamstring, hand, hip, knee, rotator cuff, and tibial may be swollen and inflamed. Tendonitis is usually quite painful and it can become frustrating if it interferes significantly with daily routines. Severe tendonitis also runs the risk of rupturing a tendon in which case surgery may be necessary.

    Help for Tendonitis

Treatment of tendonitis generally aims at reducing inflammation and pain relief. Other than that, if the affected area is given significant rest, the healing process will occur naturally in time. There are however various natural ingredients that support this natural healing process and help speed recovery, while alleviating associated symptoms such as pain and inflammation or swelling.

Homeopathic ingredients such as Magnesium phosphoricum and Matricaria recutita both have powerful anti-inflammatory properties and both are renowned for their soothing effect on aching muscles. Arnica is also a well known ingredient that helps promote the healing of connective tissue, cartilage and bones.

The essential oils of peppermint, pine, and ginger also have a very soothing effect when used topically on the affected area. Peppermint essential oil has powerful anti-inflammatory properties while Ginger essential oil has a long history of use for soothing aches and pains.

How to help achieve tendonitis relief:
    • Restrict or immobilize the affected area whenever possible with the use of slings, splints, elastic wraps and crutches. This will allow the tendon time to heal.
    • Use ice packs or simply wrap some ice in a towel and apply regularly to the affected area for up to 20 minutes at a time. This will help to relieve pain, reduce swelling and ease muscle cramps.
    • If tendonitis affects your knees then elevate your legs to help reduce and alleviate the swelling
    • Compress the area using a bandage, elastic wrap or sports guard. This will reduce swelling and give the tendon time to heal.
    • Gentle movement and mild exercise generally reduces the stiffness often associated with tendonitis, however, make sure you give it sufficient rest and do not to over-work the tendon as this will worsen the symptoms. Swimming or water aerobics are the best option when exercising an inflamed tendon.
