Alternative Thyroid Treatments

The endocrine system of our body consists chiefly of the thyroid, pituitary, adrenal, parathyroid, pancreas, ovaries and testes. These organs release hormones that regulate metabolism of the body into the blood or lymph systems. Metabolism is a continuous process in which food, water, and oxygen are converted into tissue, energy, and waste.

The thyroid is small in size but it has a significant role to play in the overall performance of the endocrine system. It produces hormones like thyroxin and triiodothyronine that control the rate of oxidation in cells. Even a minute disturbance in the quantity and balance of these hormones can cause many adverse symptoms in the body. An imbalance can cause hypothyroidism if the thyroid does not produce adequate amounts of hormones. On the other hand, an overactive thyroid can cause hyperthyroidism. A thyroid malfunction can also cause the iodine levels to fall drastically, causing a condition known as goiter.

Proper and accurate diagnosis of a thyroid malfunction is extremely difficult because a hyperactive or a lethargic thyroid causes symptoms that are very general in nature. Symptoms such as sudden gain or loss in weight can often be ignored. To make the task more difficult, laboratory tests that are used for determining accurate thyroid functioning are inconclusive in nature.

Thyroid treatment typically involves drugs that are used to maintain accurate hormone levels. For example, thyroid medications for hypothyroidism attempt to replenish the supply of hormones that are deficient in the body. Like all synthetically prepared drugs, thyroid medications have side effects. In fact, hormonal treatments have been notorious for causing more than their share of complications.

Thankfully, there are home remedies and alternative thyroid treatments that are safe and have been known to prevent and cure thyroid imbalances. Natural thyroid medication includes supplements that need to be administered while on a regulated diet.

An unhealthy diet is considered to be one of the major causes of thyroid related diseases. Peanuts, peanut butter, soybean oil contain goitrogens that block iodine from being absorbed. And therefore, the role of a controlled diet becomes extremely important in the overall treatment of thyroid related conditions.

Coconut oil can help in reviving a slow metabolism and can prove to be a boon for those suffering from hypothyroidism. Ayurveda, an Indian holistic system of medicine, purports that a diet rich in milk, milk products, cane sugar juice, barley, and lentils can effectively restore thyroid functioning.

Yoga has numerous exercise postures called asanas that can have a dramatic affect upon the thyroid gland. These postures are intended to put pressure on the gland to restore proper functions. Such yogic exercises help the thyroid gland to release blocked hormones. They also improve overall circulation.

Homoeopathic treatments use natural products processed in a complex manner. Remedies like Calcarea carbonica, Lapis albus, Iodine, Spongia tosta, Lycopus, Virginicus, Thyroidine, Natrum muriaticum have proven their worth as an effective natural thyroid medication.
