Sex is a huge part of life and our society has placed major emphasis on its importance (how to have it, when to have it, where to have it, with whom to have it, and why or why not we should have it)! No matter how it has influenced you, it is likely to be a point of interest in your life.
So let’s consider how to better enjoy it by incorporating in some yoga. Are the first thoughts that come up at the mention of yoga and sex related to the Kama Sutra and tantric yoga? Do you really understand how these things work? It’s not just the practice of exotic positions that will improve your sex life. Yoga is about a mind-body connection; and sex is, without a doubt, a mind-body connection too!
First, yoga gets you in touch with your inner self. It draws together the mental and the physical being in a way that most people find surprising. For example, a lot of people are so not tuned in to their own body that they wouldn’t notice a subtle shift such as thirst until it becomes a raging headache. Try some deep breathing before sex. Just focus on the in and outflow of your breath, and you will become acutely aware of your own body. You become fully present in the moment, and awareness of all your senses is heightened. Suddenly, nothing else matters; not the business meeting you have in an hour, and not the fight you guys had last week.
Another way yoga can enhance your sexual experience is by calming your nerves, which in turn lowers your blood pressure and eases tension. Whether it’s a vinyasa (flow) class or a few static postures that are held for several breaths, the focused and deliberate nature of yoga practice brings an element of relaxation. This intense concentration, the infamous “zone” that athletes often refer to, enables you to focus on the moment and tune out external stressors. You engage your parasympathetic nervous system, relaxing your heart rate, blood pressure and nerve responses. What’s more, when you practice yoga regularly, your body begins to remember this state, and can return to it more quickly and easily, instead of staying in the stress induced “fight or flight” state of the sympathetic nervous system. When you are relaxed and your body is not tense, you can enjoy sex more!
Here are two yoga poses you can try that may increase blood flow to your genitals (for both men and women):
1. Supta Padangustasana (Reclining Hand-to-Toe Pose)
Lie on your back with your legs extended straight and feet together. Inhale deeply, gently press the small of your back toward the earth, and extend your right leg straight up toward the sky. Depending on your flexibility, catch your calf with your right hand, or drape a strap across the top of your foot and hold onto the dangling ends, or catch your big toe with your thumb, index and middle fingers. Relax your head, neck and shoulders, and gently draw your leg closer to your body. Keeping both of your legs straight, inhale and exhale deeply for 3-5 breaths. Exhale your leg back to the ground and repeat on the other side.
2. Upavista Konasana (Seated Wide Angle Forward Bend Pose)
Sit with your legs extended in front of you, your back straight and your sit bones firmly rooted in the earth. Inhale deeply and move your feet away from each other as wide as comfortable while maintaining your posture and straight knees, so that your legs make a “V”. Exhale and hinge forward at your hips. Depending on your flexibility, extend your arms in front of you on the earth or along your thighs, your shins, ankles, feet or catch your big toes with your thumb, index and middle fingers. Inhale and exhale deeply in this position for 3-5 breaths, then slowly lift your torso and draw your legs together using your hands to support behind your knees.
Incorporating yoga into your daily routine will touch all aspects of your life, including your sex life. While beginning deep breathing exercises and practicing these poses, you may find it beneficial to use herbs to naturally increase libido as well. Native Remedies makes holistic products (Ikawe for men and Thanda Passion Booster for women) that are safe and effective for enhancing your sexual experience.
