3. What exactly does Nature’s Birth Drops do?

Long before the advent of hospitals and modern allopathic medicine, herbs were used to support the mother before, during and after childbirth. Nature’s Birth Drops contains a combination of these herbs, specially chosen for their beneficial and supportive effects on the mother during labor. They help to support productive uterine contractions and a natural healthy birth experience - as well as maintaining a sense of calm during childbirth.

4. What does Nature’s Birth Drops contain?

Nature's Birth Drops is a 100% herbal formula which contains the following carefully selected herbs in therapeutic dosage:

  • Wood betony (Stachys officinalis) is a wonderfully gentle and soothing herb and is suitable for use during labor.
  • Papoose Root (Blue Cohosh) has been extensively used by Native American women for childbirth. Blue Cohosh is known to support the uterus during labor, at the same time maintaining the efficiency of contractions to speed up the birth process. This herb also has a soothing effect on the nerves and has been widely used by midwives to support labor. (McFarlin, B. L., Gibson, M. H., O'Rear, J., and Harman, P. "A national survey of herbal preparation use by nurse-midwives for labor stimulation. Review of the literature and recommendations for practice." J.Nurse Midwifery 1999;44(3):205-216)
  • Pasque Flower (Pulsatilla vulgaris) is another soothing herb which lends itself to the support of women during labor and the maintenance of stable mood during childbirth. It is also supportive of regular effective uterine contractions.
  • Raspberry leaves (Rubus idaeus) are known to be an excellent herbal supplement for pregnant women, especially those who are nearing the very end of their pregnancy. This ingredient helps to maintain the tone of the uterine ligaments and supports healthy labor and delivery. (Simpson, M., Parsons, M., Greenwood, J., and Wade, K. "Raspberry leaf in pregnancy: its safety and efficacy in labor." J Midwifery Women’s Health 2001;46(2):51-59.) (Parsons, M., Simpson, M., and Wade, K. "Labour and the raspberry leaf herb." Pract.Midwife. 2000;3(9):20-23.)
  • Vervain (Verbena officinalis) is well-known for its ability to relax common nervous tension and helps to support the start of healthy lactation (breastfeeding.)

13. How will I know when I am really in labor?

There are a number of signs to indicate that you are in labor. Although you should be aware of these signs, remember that many women experience things differently and what may apply to you may not apply to others. This is perfectly normal. Also remember that 'false alarms' are common and many women mistake the normal activity of late pregnancy as an indication that they are going into labor. This is a time when your body is 'getting into gear' and there may be one or two 'practice runs' before the real thing! If you arrive at the hospital or birthing center certain that you are in labor only to be sent home- don't be embarrassed- it happens all the time!

14. What are some signs of labor?

Regular contractions that become more frequent, closer together and increase in intensity. While the normal contractions of late pregnancy (called 'Braxton Hicks' contractions) may often be mistaken for the onset of labor, you can be relatively certain that labor has begun if your contractions have been going for about an hour, are evenly spaced about 5 minutes apart and last for about a minute each.

A gush or constant trickle of fluid from the vagina indicating that your water has 'broken'. Passing of the mucus 'plug' that keeps the uterus closed during pregnancy. This is sometimes called a 'show'.

A bloody or brownish mucus discharge accompanying the above symptoms.
Don't hesitate to call your midwife, doctor or birth assistant if you are not sure. They will be able to reassure you and want to know of any changes that occur -even if you are not yet in true labor.

15. How do I know that these herbs are safe for my baby?

Nature's Birth Drops contains herbs that have been safely used for centuries in traditional folk medicine to help women during childbirth. Despite the safety of the herbs during this time, it should be remembered that herbs are medicines and should therefore be used during childbirth only under supervision of your doctor, midwife, doula or other health professional.

16. What else can I do?

Prepare yourself mentally, physically and spiritually for the birth by reading books on childbirth, joining a support group for pregnant women, speaking to mothers of children or your own mother or mother-in-law. Taking good care of yourself in the form of a balanced diet, getting enough rest, relieving stress, meditating and talking with your partner about the future will be invaluable in preparing yourself for labor, birth and parenthood.

Organize a birth plan including the place you would like to deliver, who should be present and your preferences of medical interventions in different circumstances.

A supportive environment at the birth has been shown to be one of the most important factors in the speed of delivery and how much pain the mother feels. Think carefully about who you would like to have present at the birth for support and consider a trained doula or birthing assistant.
