Wash away irritation
Tears help bathe the eye – washing away everyday germs, dust, or other particles. These tears are manufactured above the outer corner of each eye in the lacrimal glands. When the eyes blink, hundreds of times per day, tiny amounts of tear fluid are excreted for protection. In this way, tears help to keep your eyes from drying out.
When a foreign body enters the eye, hundreds of tiny capillaries on the eyeball become inflamed and can cause red eyes, while microscopic nerves produce an itchy sensation. Eyebrows and eyelashes also serve as ‘particle catchers’ – helping to stop tiny debris from falling into the eye, or scratching the eyeball surface.
The natural way
There is a lot that can be done to keep your eyes protected from dust and debris. Wear goggles during times when debris or chemicals could go flying (such as wood shop, metal shop, science lab, or art or mowing the lawn). Similarly, when playing racquetball, hockey, skiing, or other sports that could injure your eyes, protective measures should be taken.
If small debris is caught in the eye, try not to rub the eye – as this may cause the particle to scratch the inner part of the eyelid. Rather gently splash the eye with tepid water (no soap!). Natural remedies can also help to wash out the eye. In fact, natural wash solutions have been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years to support the health of the eye. |
