Living with Sciatica
The sciatic nerve is the longest peripheral nerve in the body, and runs from the lower back through the pelvis and buttock area, right down to the back of the lower leg. It is an extension of the lower end of the spinal cord and is made up of the lumbar and sacral nerve roots from the spine.
Sciatica is a fairly common form of lower back and leg pain experienced along the path of the sciatic nerve, typically resulting from pressure on the nerve due to a herniated or slipped vertebral disc (“pinched nerve”), stenosis, spinal tumors, injury and trauma. The pain of sciatica varies from an infrequent discomfort to a continuous, excruciating and debilitating pain, and is sometimes felt as a burning sensation or a sharp jolt. Sciatica may be sudden or insidious in onset and worsen over time.
In some people who suffer from sciatic pain, it may be accompanied by a numbness or weakness in the leg or foot as well as a feeling of tingling or pins-and-needles in the toes.
Problems affecting the bones, joints and muscles of the back and pelvis can also cause sciatica, though these may not always be easily diagnosed, sometimes leaving the cause of the sciatic pain unknown.
Physically demanding occupations, which require heavy lifting, driving long hours or twisting the back are all risk factors for developing sciatica.
Depending on the cause of sciatica, numbness or lameness in the affected limb may occur as well as loss of bladder and bowel control in some cases. In severe cases of sciatica, permanent nerve damage may occur.
The natural way
Most people with sciatica are prescribed pain-killers, anti-inflammatory medications or anti-inflammatory steroids to relieve the pain. These generally provide some relief but have the potential to cause serious adverse side effects. Because of the dangers, there is a limit on how many of these injections an individual can receive - not usually more than three per year.
Natural remedies have been used for thousands of years to gently and effectively relieve the symptoms of sciatica and neuralgia. More recently, modern research has confirmed their effectiveness.
They can also be used in combination with conventional, less invasive treatments, such as physical therapy and stretching/strengthening exercises as well as hot and cold packs, to offer a more holistic look at the individual and take into account diet, lifestyle and other factors contributing to overall health.
Maintaining the health and strength of the vertebra and surrounding tissues is very important. Practice good back health and be sure not to put strain on the lumbar region. Regular back exercises, as well as exercises like swimming and walking, can help to support the integrity of the spine. Be sure you maintain a healthy posture and consider taking up yoga or Pilates, which can help to strengthen the central core of the body. Sleep on an orthopedic mattress to support your back at night.
Eat a healthy diet and take daily supplements known to benefit the health of bone, cartilage and nerves. These include zinc, magnesium, calcium, vitamin C and manganese. Avoid cigarettes and excess alcohol. |
