What is a stye?
A stye is a tender, painful red bump located at the base of an eyelash or under or inside the eyelid. A stye can occur when the oil glands of the eyelids become overly agitated, irritated or clogged. A stye may also arise from an infected hair follicle at the base of an eyelash. Shortly before a stye develops, redness, tenderness, and general pain can be felt in the affected area. The eye may also feel irritated or scratchy.
Later sensations can include swelling, discomfort during blinking, watering of the eye, and sensitivity to light. A stye can also present itself as small, yellowish spot at the center of the bump that develops as pus expands in the area. Styes are very common and people of all ages can develop a stye, especially if the immune system is weakened.
The natural way
There are many things that you can do to prevent a stye naturally. Practice good hygiene habits, including proper hand washing. Never share cosmetics or cosmetic eye tools (such as lash curlers or eyelash combs) with others and always discard old or contaminated eye makeup.
If you wear contact lenses, speak to your optometrist to determine a healthy amount of hours per day to wear contacts, and do not exceed this recommendation. Follow strict hygiene rules when it comes to contact maintenance. As far as possible, avoid touching the eye and always aim at getting an adequate amount of sleep nightly. |
